While training for his December 1 showdown against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, former WBA, IBF, WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury opened up to SHOWTIME announcer Mauro Ranallo about his years-long struggle with mental health. “If mental illness can bring someone as big as me, as strong as me to my knees,” said Fury, “then it can bring anybody to their knees.”
Fury ballooned to 400lbs and struggled with alcohol and drugs after his career-defining win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. He eventually sought help and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“It was like having a fight in my own mind,” Fury recalled. “[Mental illness] is a silent killer. It’s almost like carbon monoxide poisoning because you can’t see it.
“My calling card is to spread the word on mental health.”
