Diaz Breezes, Chargin Lauded

Highlighting a boxing card mixed with rapid action and a salute to recently-deceased promoter Don Chargin, lightweight Joel Diaz Jr. (24-1) of Glendale stopped Miguel Huerta (28-16-1)) of Mexico City in their main event Saturday night at Cache Creek Casino and Resort in Brooks, Calif. Diaz notched his 20th KO by putting his overwhelmed foe on the deck with a series of left hooks, forcing a stoppage at 2:46.

Chargin, 90, died Sept. 28 after a Hall-of-Fame career of matchmaking and promoting, which included this card. Co-promoter Paco Damian ordered up a tribute in the ring, complete with emotionally-choked praise and a video of Chargin, narrated by close friend and ring announcer Bill Caplan.

In a co-feature fight, Vacaville light heavyweight Ryan Bourland (16-2) avenged a February defeat to Jose Hernandez (19-5-1) of Los Angeles, winning their rematch by majority 10-round decision. The first fight went to Hernandez, also by majority decision and in the same ring. The encore saw Bourland wobbled in the first round but mostly an even exchange of blows followed. The judges’ scores were 97-93, 97-93, 95-95.

In other bouts, it was Jorge Chavez (3-0) of Vacaville by KO-2 over Albert Leyva (1-2) of Beverly Hills, super-middleweights; Rudy Macedo (8-0) of Uruguay by KO-2 over Yasmani Pedrosa (2-5) of Cuba, super-welterweights; Ivan Vergara (6-0) of Vacaville by UD-4 over Pablo Cupul (11-27) of Mexico, lightweights; and Blake McKernan (10-0) of Sacramento by UD-6 over Alfredo Contreras (13-22-2) of Mexico, heavyweights.
