Rojas named WBA minimumweight mandatory

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee has named Nicaraguan Byron Rojas as the mandatory challenger for current Minimumweight Champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong of Thailand. This resolution was made according to article C29 of the WBA Rules, which indicates that a mandatory challenger in a division may be selected by the Championships Committee or through an elimination fight.

Niyomtrong, who has been WBA champion at 105 pounds since 2016, has agreed on an optional defense for March 6 against Filipino Toto Landero, number 12 in the WBA rankings. The winner of that fight must negotiate immediately a fight with Rojas in a period no longer than 30 days, otherwise the fight will be called to a purse bid.

The parties involved were duly informed by the Championships Committee and, as established in the rules, their knowledge of the WBA regulations is presumed.
