Boxing Results from Bakersfield

Bakersfield lightweight product Miguel Contreras ran his record to 6-0, 5 KOs, after Mike Melikyan (4-4-1, 1 KO) could not answer the bell to start the sixth round on Friday night at Stramler Park in Bakersfield, California. Fighting behind a partisan crowd, Contreras wore down Melikyan using a solid body attack and picked up steam as the fight progressed to secure the stoppage in his hometown.

Jose Rodriguez (1-1) and Eduardo Sanchez (1-1) rematched their February debut in a four round lightweight slugfest in which Rodriguez would get the better of it this time. The fight was all out with Rodriguez landing the heavier shots. Scores were 40-36 for Rodriguez in a bout that was much closer than the scores indicated.

45-year-old debuting Bakersfield heavyweight Art Santore (1-0) showed surprising skill and hand speed in defeating the much younger Ignacio Zambrano (2-4, 1ko) by scores of 40-36 across in a solid heavyweight battle. Santore had ample energy and ring generalship, probably as a result of a sufficient MMA fighting career.

Adrian Voldovinos (2-0, 2ko) from nearby Hanford and pro debuting MMA fighter from Bakersfield Trey Branch (0-1) went to world war three for two rounds before the lanky Voldovinos stopped branch with a vicious body attack in round three. Branch will make for exciting fights on the local circuit while Voldovinos shows promise.

Veteran middleweight Tavorus Teague from Bakersfield defeated fellow Bakersfield pro debuter Ray Cervera (0-1) over 4 rounds by unanimous decision by 40-36 across the board. Neither were ever hurt.

Derion Chapman a super welter from Los Angeles (2-1-1, 1ko) sharp shot and ultimately stopped insanely game pro debuter Juan Villalobos in the fourth round of an all-out war. Chapman controlled the early going with movement and excellent sharpshooting but Villalobos would rally in the third to the point where it appeared the tide was all the way turned. However, Chapman regrouped and a straight beautiful straight left hand in the fourth undid a gallant effort by Villalobos.

In the opener, lightweights Stephen Fulton 1-0 and Alejandro Lopez Huerta 1-1 fought to a no-contest after three rounds of fairly even boxing when the lights at Stramler Park unexpectedly went out, causing an uneasy fifteen minute delay in what was otherwise about as good of a club boxing show as one could ever watch.

“Beat the Streets” was a show produced by Red Boxing in association with Steve Rodarte and Whitfield Haydon Boxing. The theme was revolving around an effort to eliminate gang violence in the greater Bakersfield area.
