Athough his IBF title has been stripped and his WBC belt is in limbo (as is the WBC), junior middleweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright is moving ahead with his rematch against Shane Mosley planned for November 20th. Fightnews.com recently had an opportunity to chat with the true 154lb world titleholder.
Now that your victory over Shane Mosely has settled in, how does it feel to walk around and be recognized as the undisputed champion at 154?
It feels great, but for me it’s just something that’s been long awaited. It’s more of a sigh of relief like 'damn it’s finally here...now everybody feels the same way I have always felt about my boxing skills.' But other than that all is the same. I don’t live differently and I don’t do any much different than before. But like I said it feels good to know that everyone recognizes me as the best at my weight class.
Your next fight is scheduled for November 20th against Shane Mosley. Why did you decide to fight him again considering you beat him so soundly?
Well there isn’t really much out there right now. I know Shane Mosley and he gave me my chance and now I’ve decided to give him a chance. He was a man in stepping up to fight me when no one else would and now I want to do the same for him.
You’ve been nominated by ESPN for the Best Boxer ESPY award, how important is that to you?
Now that’s very important to me and it feels great. I went to the ESPYs with Vernon Forrest when he was nominated and it was great to see the people recognizing him at all the parties. Now it’s my turn and it feels great that I’ll be recognized. It’s an honor to be nominated.
Looking into the future, what’s next if you beat Mosley in November?
I want Tito Trinidad! If he wins his fight against Mayorga and I win mine that is definitely the fight we’re looking for.
Trinidad is campaigning at 160, are you planning on moving to that weight?
No, I’d like to stay at 154, but for I will move up to fight him.
Continuing to look forward, if you beat Trinidad and Hopkins beats De La Hoya…what then?
Then I want the winner. That’s all I want, the fights that people want to see. I fought everyone else. I’ve fought 50 fights, I’ve fought everybody. Now it’s time for me to fight the best. All those people that didn’t want to give me the fight…now I have an opportunity to get those fights. I want them and I’m not wrong in wanting them.
You’re now 32 years old, how much longer do you plan on fighting?
It all depends on the fans. If they want to see me fight and I can get good purses and good opponents, I’ll be there. But as soon as people start avoiding me again and I can’t make any money then that will be the end for me. I live a comfortable life and I’ll be done if that happens again.
Any final thoughts for your fans that have supported you through the years?
I would love to thank the fans that stuck behind me when I wasn’t the Winky Wright that beat Shane Mosely. When I was the Winky Wright that was fighting overseas, all over the world just trying to get my opportunity. I want to thank all of them for supporting me and pushing the other fighters that avoided me into fighting me. I want to thank them for sending the e-mails to the TV networks. If it weren’t for them I would have been left alone and pushed aside. I want to thank them for pushing me and believing in me. This last fight was not just a win for me, but for all those that supported and believed in me.
