Universum promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl and WBA heavyweight Ruslan Chagaev have commented on the Chagaev's alleged "eye problem" as reported by BILD and other media. "On February 28, 2007, Ruslan Chagaev was examined in the German Army Hospital here in Hamburg before the first fight Valuev - where it was determined that Ruslan can box without restrictions," said Kohl. "On March 17, 2008, after the first rumors were spread by his former manager, we received a second opinion which said quite clearly that the retina is stable. We always do everything we can because our priority is the health of our athletes. In this case we can also provide medical documentation. I'm disappointed by his former manager. I think it's bad when someone spreads such falsehoods. We know that in the United States [Ruslan] successfully had his eyes lasered. Health is the most important thing for a boxer." Chagaev stated simply, "Up to now I have not talked publicly about the differences with my former manager and I don't want to talk any further about it. I can't understand him any more!" Wednesday, May 7 2008 SPECIAL Arnaoutis-Tyner heats up! Promoter Joe DeGuardia promises "plenty of fireworks!" USBA jr welterweight titleholder "Mighty Mike" Arnaoutis (18-2-2, 9 KOs) and undefeated Lanardo Tyner (19-0, 11 KOs) are talking some smack in advance of their ESPN2-televised twelve rounder on Friday at Bally's Atlantic City. "Tyner will know what its like to be in the big time when he steps into the ring with someone like me," stated Arnaoutis. "Rest assured he will be going back to Houston with a loss on his record. Right now I have everything working the way I want, I have a great corner and this will be the year of 'Mighty Mike.' Lanardo Tyner is just a bump in the road for me." Tyner stated, "This is my time. Arnaoutis had his shots and its time for him to move over...I'm old school, the fans love to watch me fight because I do not B.S. in the ring. I hope "Mighty Mike" is ready because I'm coming to knock him out and take home his belt." 2004 U.S. Olympic team captain Devin Vargas (15-0, 6 KOs) battles Philly tough guy Dave Brunelli (8-3, 3 KOs) in the televised eight-round heavyweight co-main event. “I'm not taking my opponent lightly, I know he is from Philadelphia where a lot of great fighters like Bobby Watts, Bennie Briscoe, Eugene Hart, Willie Monroe and Bernard Hopkins are from. This fight will springboard my career and the viewing audience will see just what Devin Vargas is all about.” Brunelli responded: "I know I'm coming into this fight as an underdog but that is the way we like it. I know my opponent is more experienced but I come from the fighting city of Philadelphia and I'll have all my fans there cheering me on to victory." "Both of these fights are matched competitively,” stated promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing. “Arnaoutis has fought for the world title and Tyner is an undefeated prospect. Vargas is a former Olympian and Brunelli is your tough-guy heavyweight from Philly, just like Rocky Balboa. I know we will see plenty of fireworks!” Tickets are $90 to $60 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets (including online) or call 800-736-1420. The bout will take place in Bröndby, Denmark on June 21st. Kessler is currently training for the bout in Big Bear, California. The bout will take place on the same date as when Arthur Abraham takes on hard-punching Colombian Edison Miranda in Florida. Talks of a Mikkel Kessler-Edison Miranda fight were very much on the front burner awhile back, but the promoters failed to come to an agreement. With my trainer Magomed Schaburow and my team, we were just in an extremely hard training camp near Moscow. I couldn't have prepared any better and harder than I did there. I'm doing the rest of my preparation in Hamburg. I want to bring the WBA title to Germany!" "Dimitri Sartison has more than earned this chance," added promoter Dietmar Poszwa. By Lisa Scott Since Mike Tyson’s felony arrest for drug possession in December 2006, he spent the remainder of 2007 in rehab and has reportedly been clean and sober ever since. He is currently under court mandated sobriety with monthly drug and alcohol testing. Regarding his newfound life of sobriety, a hefty looking Tyson told ESPN’s ‘E:60': “It’s a struggle. I want to take drugs everyday. I want to drink everyday. But I don’t because I made the commitment not to. I take things day by day now and I am adjusting to it. I don’t hang out with the people that I normally acquainted myself with in the past because I’m not that type of person anymore.” Tyson, who turns 42 years old next month, also went on to say: “I don’t want to get involved with my old lifestyle. I just want a different life now. I saw what that life got me, so I’m trying to build a new life that’s functional now. I wake up. Make my bed. Watch television. Then, I call my accountant to hear him say “no,” he’s not going to give me any money. Controlling my spending habits is a part of the change I guess.” In reflecting upon his days as ruler of the heavyweight division and the pandemonium that surrounded him, Tyson stated: “Maybe I was addicted to chaos. And that was the only way I knew how to function at that time. When I look back at the things I’ve done in my life, I realize that I brought them upon myself and now I have to deal with the responsibility - and I don’t like that. That’s what I have a problem dealing with.” Regarding his 1st round KO win over Michael Spinks in 1988, Tyson stated: “I really couldn’t enjoy that victory because I had so much chaos going on in my life at that time. I had my wife fighting with my managers and I had three girlfriends in the audience. It was just a mess. I wish things didn’t turn out like they did, with my career and everything. But I gave it a hell of a fight. I didn’t lay down and I didn’t give up. I kept in there and gave it a good fight... and I’m still fighting.” Rumors of Tyson getting back into the ring again have been emphatically denied by his manager Harlan Werner. Below are post-fight comments from Saturday's tension-filled WBA world title fight in Stuttgart between cruiserweight champion Firat Arslan and Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man" Wilson. Arslan took an impressive unanimous decision to retain his title in his first defense. Firat Arslan: I'm happy that it's over, that it's a positive result and that I won. Wilson fought a great fight. He packed a powerful punch and was very dangerous. I thank Dietmar Poszwa (Spotlight Boxing promoter) that I could box in my hometown, and I thank my fans who really motivated me. I feel great, and as long as I remain in top shape, I want big fights. I'm no longer the youngest, however I want to fight the best. A title unification would be great! Darnell Wilson: I did my best, but there was no "ding-a-ling" today. He had a super defense and was always coming forward. He's a great champion. From the tenth round I was very tired, his pressure simply wore me out. At the end I gave everything I had once more, however I couldn't get him. I'll be back. Germany is great, I was treated really well and the people here are very friendly. I'd happily come here again. Arslan's Trainer Valentin Silaghi: I trembled from the first second to the last. Wilson is always dangerous, but Firat listened and boxed very self-controlledly. I thank to him for trusting me and listening to me in the breaks between rounds. Wilson's Trainer Charles Mooney: It was a terrific fight. Firat's defense, as well as his offense, was super. He's a great champion, Unfortunately we lost today, but that's how it is, you lose some, you win some. Darnell boxed great. He can go through the streets with his chin high. He did what he had to do and brought a very good performance. Monday, May 5 2008 NEWS FLASH King Arthur in France! He has supported myself a lot of times, I want to keep my fingers crossed for him in France too. He's undefeated, if he wins he will have good chances to do bigger fights. I'm his brother, so I'm very excited," says King Arthur. Beyond the 26-year-old Alexander Abraham, super welterweight prospect Koko Murat (5-0-1, 3 KOs) will be on the card also. Davis dropped Norman in the second round with a solid right hand that weighed heavily on two judges scorecards. Davis also benefitted from Norman having a point deducted in the seventh round for repeatedly spitting out his mouthpiece. Norman lost his mouthpiece six times during the contest, at some points when he seemed to have the offensive advantage. Judge John Gradowski saw the draw at 75-75 while Judge Kenny Chevalier scored the bout 78-73 and Judge Don Risher scored it 78-72 for Davis. (More) Monday, May 5 2008 RESULT Osei Bonsu outpoints Plotnikov! By Alexey Sukachev In Antwerp, Belgium, ranked #5 by the WBC and #11 by the WBA and by the IBF in welterweight division Jackson Osei Bonsu (28-1, 23 KOs) successfully retained his European title for the fourth time with a hard-fought decision over Ukrainian challenger Victor Plotnikov (19-1, 9 KOs). It was possibly the toughest fight for Belgian-based crushing banger of Ghanaian origin in recent years. According to local sources, Bonsu started fast scoring frequently with his powerful and awkward punches. Plotnikov adjusted to Bonsu’s inconvenient style and controlled the midst of the bout. However, the Belgian pugilist rallied late and clinched a close fight in ending rounds to earn a unanimous decision on all judges’ scorecards: 116-113, 116-112, and 116-112. No knockdowns were scored. Bonsu is 2-0 this year surprisingly without featuring his frightening power. Plotnikov suffered his first career loss in his first ever match out of native Ukraine but can be back for more significant fights after a gutsy effort Saturday. Monday, May 5 2008 NEWS FLASH Chinese boxer stays in coma By Joe Koizumi A Japan-based Chinese boxer named Cho He (5-6, 4 KOs) remains in a coma because of a brain injury after his stoppage by JBC#11 super-light contender Daichi Sakoda (9-1, 6 KOs) at 2:53 of the sixth and final round beneath a Japanese national 140-pound title bout on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. Cho dropped the higher ranked Sakoda with a solid left hook in the first round, and fought well before the southpaw Sakoda came back fighting to offset his deficit on points. In the literally fatal and last round Cho, still game and gallant, absorbed Sakoda’s solid combinations to become rubber-legged and the referee called a halt with only seven seconds remaining in the contest. Some people say it looked even premature as Cho had scored a first-round knockdown and it was still closely contested. Cho, prone on the deck, was paralyzed with his legs trembling even while he was carried out of the ring on a stretcher. The JBC doctor immediately advised to take him to Jikei Medical Hospital, where his brain was promptly operated on to remove blood clots. Cho, 22, remains in a coma there. WBC super middleweight mandatory challenger Carl Froch will box Rubin Williams in a twelve round contest as the co-feature this Saturday at the Trent FM Arena Nottingham. Froch will have his first fight since being made the official WBC mandatory challenger on the same show as WBC light-welterweight champion Junior Witter's third world title defense against his mandatory challenger Timothy Bradley. Williams replaces Denis Inkin who pulled out of a scheduled WBC final eliminator against Froch for a second time a week ago. The Froch team alleges that handlers of former IBF champ Alejandro Berrio verbally agreed to step in ten days ago, then reneged. "Williams deserves a lot of credit," said Froch. "He's obviously prepared to fight anyone, he has a true fighters heart, unfortunately I can’t say the same for Inkin or Berrio. I’ve heard all of Inkin’s excuses, viruses, bad back, etc; I don’t buy it for a second. After doing this a second time to me the man’s got no honour he is a coward, he does not deserve to share a ring with me.....Berrio was just as bad by mucking us about, one minute saying he was in and the next saying he was out. It doesn’t matter who is in the corner though, I will still win in style and show everyone why Joe Calzaghe is avoiding me." Sunday, May 4 2008 RESULT Baloyi wins in four! By Ron Jackson Amon Baloyi smashed long serving champion Irvin Buhlalu to defeat in four rounds to win the South African lightweight title at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday afternoon. After a slow start with very little coming from either fighter the taller Baloyi 13-3-1 sprung into action to drop Buhlalu against the ropes with a right hand to the jaw. The champion made it to his feet and took a count just before the bell. The 24-year-old Baloyi (61,15kg) using his longer reach boxed well from behind the jab in the second round to score with stiff lefts and rights to the head to edge the round. In round three the challenger continued to use his boxing skills as he outboxed Buhlalu and sent him down for another count with a left-right combination to the head. Buhlalau managed to beat the count but went back to his corner on rubbery legs. A confident Baloyi boxing well within himself was in control through round four as he continued to outscore the champion before hurting him with a short left to the body and then dropping him onto his side with a chopping right to the head as referee Andile Matika counted him out at two minutes into the round. The 29-year-old Buhlalu's record drops to 24-6-1; 14. Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30 KOs) and Steve Forbes (33-5, 9 KOs) showed why they were world champions on Saturday night as "The Golden Boy" won a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision at the Home Depot Center Soccer Stadium in Carson, California. Both fighters boxed at an extremely high technical level, but Oscar was simply too fast, too strong, too skilled, just too "everything" in virtually every round as he compiled a 119-109, 119-109, 120-108 over the game, but outgunned former "Contender" star. Next up for De La Hoya is likely a September rematch with Floyd Mayweather, although that bout is not yet finalized.

WBA cruiserweight world champion Firat Arslan (29-3-1, 18 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over #14 rated Darnell 'The Ding-a-ling Man' Wilson (23-7-3, 20 KOs) on Saturday night at the Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany. Arslan pressed the action from the opening bell, but both were cautious early on. Wilson upped the output in round two and Arslan did likewise in round three. Arslan's pressure pushed Wilson back as he appeared to be imposing his will. Rounds five and six were dominated by the champion, as Wilson mostly had no answers. With chances of a points win seemingly disappearing, the "Ding-A-Ling Man" started looking for a KO as the bout progressed, winging big shots in the eighth. Arslan responded in a punishing ninth round. Arslan landed almost at will in the tenth and went on to win handily by scores of 117-111, 117-111, 117-111.
In an important clash of heavyweight contenders, unbeaten WBO #2 ranked Alexander Dimitrenko (28-0, 17 KOs) scored a sudden and impressive fifth round TKO over WBO #7 ranked Derric Rossy (18-1, 10 KOs). Saturday, May 3 2008 COLUMN Tua, Greenberg in Odessa? Ukrainian Boxing Report By Alexey Sukachev According to rumors circulating incessantly in Ukrainian media, Odessa, the Ukraine's largest seaport, will host a world-class show featuring several household names in the first half of July 2008. Former world title challenger David ‘Terminator’ Tua (49-3-1, 42 KOs) and unbeaten heavyweight prospect Roman Greenberg (27-0, 18 KOs) will reportedly see action in separate bouts. Also former two-time cruiserweight title challenger and four-time European beltholder Alexander Gurov (40-6-1, 34 KOs) is scheduled to face ever-dangerous TBA instead of May 17 showdown with Enad Licina in Germany. Some reports also name Ukrainian-Jewish New-Yorker Dmitry Salita and Odessa-native featherweight Yuri Voronin (25-8-2, 17 KOs) as possible participants, though the majority of sources insist on only heavyweight nature of this boxing card. An approximate date of the tournament is July, 12. Odessa possesses one of the largest Jewish diaspora outside of Israel. WBO #3 featherweight Oleg Yefimovich (13-1, 9 KOs) will reportedly face unbeaten Spaniard Sergio Blanco (17-0-1, 4 KOs) for the vacant European crown on July 5 in Donetsk, Ukraine. In his last outing Blanco was controversially held to a draw by former European meister Alberto Servidei in a fight many observers saw him easily winning. Yefimovich, sturdy local banger, leveled Blanco compatriot Juan Garcia Martin in four rounds to retain WBO intercontinental belt in March. This fight will presumably be promoted by Yuri Ruban of Union Boxing Promotions. European lightweight champion Yuri Romanov of Belarus (WBA #4, WBC #8, WBO #11 and IBF #13) decided to forfeit his continental belt in order to seek an opportunity for a WBA title shot against either unified WBA/IBF/WBO champion Nate Campbell or WBA regular beltholder Jose Alfaro (20-3, 18 KOs). Romanov (25-2, 18 KOs) will make a long trip to Tokyo on May 19 to witness Alfaro’s optional defense against Japanese Yusuke Kobori (22-2-1, 11 KOs) as well as a tune-up fight between WBA #1 Paulus Moses (22-0, 16 KOs) against fellow compatriot Yauhen Kruhlik (7-10). According to Gennady Narkevich, chairman of Professional Boxing Federation of Belarus, Romanov will also see action in Odessa tournament in a non-title fight. The vacant EBU title will be at stake for #1 European lightweight contender Juan Carlos Diaz Melero (36-1, 19 KOs) and Ukrainian veteran Andrey Kudriavtsev (26-4, 11 KOs) instead. Gennady Delisandru (15-13-1, 5 KOs) successfully acquired the vacant GBU bantamweight belt with an easy twelve-round decision (119-108, 118-111, 119-109) over former fringe contender Andrey Kostin (18-8, 6 KOs) on April 24th in Lviv, Ukraine. Also successful were undefeated heavyweight prospects Andrey Rudenko (10-0, 4 KOs), Volodimir Lazebnik (13-0, 8 KOs), Alexander Sidorov (6-0, 1 KOs) and 6’9’’ Alexander Kabanov (3-2, 2 KOs) and junior middleweight Kostya Rovensky (9-0, 1 KO). Saturday, May 3 2008 NEWS FLASH Judge for Yourself: Charisma, Attention and Scoring! By Tom Schreck Oscar De La Hoya transcends boxing. He is a pop star in the true sense of the word. De La Hoya is the "Golden Boy" of boxing in terms of popularity, in ticket sells and pay-per-views buys. De La Hoya is the biggest name in boxing today as both a boxing superstar and as a promoter. Since the formation of Golden Boy Promotions in December 2002, De La Hoya's promotional company has quickly risen to a level that allows him to go toe-to-toe with Don King and his former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank when signing fighters or staging events. De La Hoya owns a newspaper, Ring magazine, a soccer team and he has even been nominated for an Emmy. Boxing judge Tom Schreck examines how the charisma of a fighter - like Muhammad Ali, "Sugar" Ray Leonard and De La Hoya - could affect the attention and scoring of a judge in this installment of "Judge for Yourself!" Click here to learn how to "Judge for Yourself!" Saturday, May 3 2008 NEWS FLASH Campbell: Bring on Marquez! IBF/WBO/WBA lightweight king Nate Campbell welcomes the opportunity to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, but not in November as proposed by Golden Boy Promotions. In regards to that potential fight, Campbell had this to say: "Let's do this. I'm ready to fight right now. But this waiting around until November business? What's that about? I'm ready to fight. I've BEEN ready to fight. I'm getting married in two weeks, and I can go straight to camp after my honeymoon. There's no reason this fight couldn't happen in late July or August. No reason at all. That's the problem today. See, all these cats sit around and only fight twice or three times a year, because their 'promoter' won't do anything without HBO or Showtime paying the freight. I'm with Don King and One Punch. Now I leave the business stuff up to them, but I'm sure that if Golden Boy came with a reasonable number for Marquez, then Don could do this fight on PPV himself, and not sit around for seven months waiting on a damn date. Doesn't anybody actually promote fights anymore?" (More) Saturday, May 3 2008 RESULT Kimura retains Japanese belt! By Joe Koizumi WBC#8/WBA#15 Japanese super-light champ Norio Kimura (34-5-2, 18 KOs), 140, registered his twelfth successful defense as he battered game and hard-punching challenger Daigoro Yamamoto (12-5-4, 9 KOs), 140, to the punch, bloodied him profusely and finally caught him with a barrage of punch to prompt the referee’s intervention of the lopsided affair at 2:37 of the fifth round in a scheduled ten on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. The flamboyant Kimura, whose hair was dyed in gold and red, swarmed over the reckless challenger who amazingly came out fighting from the start to cope with the champ’s vaunted and dangerous opening attack. Yamamoto’s heart might be admirable, but he absorbed much punishment of the southpaw champ in every round. In the fatal fifth Kimura accelerated his effective attack to bring him to a standstill, when the ref Asao declared a well-received halt to save the loser. Kimura said, “I’m gunning for a world title shot. If materialized, I’ll win the world title.” Anyway, Kimura must be the best and strongest 140-pounder in Asia without doubt. Undercard: Unranked busy-punching southpaw Tomoyuki Shiotani (10-11-1, 7 KOs), 140, upset JBC#8 super-light Hirofumi Ito (10-3-1, 8 KOs), 140, by winning a close but unanimous decision (96-95, 96-94 and 98-92) over ten. They kept swapping punches all the way to entertain the crowd, but the prefight favorite Ito didn’t fight his fight as he should have utilized his footwork more effectively to hit without getting hit. Ito could show his heart, but not his brain in losing an upset nod. Japanese #4 light-fly prospect Masayoshi Segawa (14-2, 4 KOs), 108, surprisingly hit the deck with a well-timed right uppercut of Thai #8 minimum Monkoldetch Patavikorngym (7-6, 2 KOs), 108, in the first round, but came back hard to drop the Thailander with his southpaw combos twice and for the count at 2:25 of the second session in a scheduled eight. By Chris Cozzone and Ricardo Trujillo Johnny Tapia pulls out last minute on “comeback” card; El Paso fight scene KO’d by fistic fiasco: Not too many fight cards have a press conference as their main event. But that’s what happened last night at the El Paso County Coliseum when former five-time world champion Johnny Tapia pulled out of his comeback headliner on a card thrown, at least on paper, by Browning Boxing. It was supposed to be the first of several fights for Tapia and former El Paso promoter Ron Weathers, who was borrowing the Texas license held by Browning Boxing. The plan was for Tapia to finish off his career with a sixth and final world title fight, against one of the champions at 122. You can e-mail your questions for Antonio and his guest at boxing@espncleveland.com Saturday, May 3 2008 RESULT El Paso results By Chris Cozzone & Ricardo Trujillo It just might be the worst fight card ever to land in El Paso, Texas . In the main event—actually, there was no main event, for five-time world champion Johnny Tapia, hoping to stage a comeback, pulled out due to contractual disputes with promoter Ron Weathers. Just hours before the card was to come off, a substitute main event was patched up between Tapia’s opponent, Pedro Rincon, and San Antonio’s Benjamin Flores. Alas, the bout was also scratched when it was learned that Flores did not have a current license. Before a scant crowd of an estimated 700 fans, a three-bout undercard was staged. Heavyweight Alfred Happy (5-0, 4 KOs) knocked out late sub, 43-year-old, 7-year retiree Joe Sullivan (3-4, 3 KOs) in the third round; Las Cruces jr. middleweight Austin Trout (14-0, 11 KOs) took out human punching bag Steve Verdin (8-39-2, 1 KO) in the second round, at 2:26; and in an “exhibition” bout, would-be pro debuter Jennifer Han floored original opponent Kalisha Harris (0-1) twice en route to a first-round stoppage—the fight would have officially come off but Harris had weighed in ten pounds under Han's weight the day before; and, in the final bout of the night, an eight-rounder downgraded to six, heavyweight, Dallas’ Lovy Page (16-8, 12 KOs), won a lackluster majority decision over Aaron Lyons (8-3, 6 KOs), of Gulfport, Miss., with scores of 59-55 twice for Page and 57-57 even.Check for a full ringside and behind-the-scenes report tomorrow morning.
