Cowboy Brown wants another shot! June 7, 2004 By Andre Courtemanche
If he is ever going to win a world title, another Calgary sports hero, “Cowboy” Dale Brown will begin his own “must win” campaign the very next evening at the New Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida against Miami’s Robert Daniels. “I want another shot,” said WBA #3 Brown, 30-3-1 (20), on the eve of his ten-round scrap against former world champion Daniels (which will also be his debut for new promoters Warrior’s Boxing). “I’m looking at having a good performance. There are some strong guys in the division, but with the right preparation, I think I can do it.” There is no longer much room for error for 32-year-old Brown, whose nine-year professional career has seen a lot of “close but no cigar” type setbacks. With stoppage losses to two of the three major cruiserweight titlists, and another to former IBF kingpin Vassiliy Jirov, he has always fallen short when trying to take it to the highest level. Brown says he can explain. “Against (WBA Champion Jean Marc) Mormeck, I just fought the wrong fight. Against (former IBF king Vassiliy) Jirov, I did really well, but a little bit was missing from my game plan. Against (WBC champ Wayne) Braithwaite, I didn’t know him going in to the fight. I hadn’t even seen him. His nickname is “The Truck.” My handlers said he would be short stocky and come right at me. On the contrary. We didn’t have the right game plan going in against Braithwaite. Usually I study my opponents, but you become trustful of your management and you hope they did their homework and unfortunately that time, they did not and that’s one of the reasons why I am not with them anymore.” It’s the Braithwaite fight that leaves a bad taste in his mouth says Brown, who claims he would gladly face the Guyana-born bomber again if given the chance. “I’d like another shot at him. He’s a very crafty fighter, but having watched him on television a few times I see that he makes a lot of mistakes and he gets hit quite a bit, so another crack at him would be great.” Promising himself to never get in the ring again without doing a bit of homework on the opponent, Brown claims he’s knows exactly what to expect from the hard-nosed Daniels. “Robert Daniels is a tough guy. He’s a former world champion with lots of experience. He’ll be coming straight forward all night long. I won’t have to look for him. He comes straight at you.” Dale Brown is living proof that a true cowboy always gets back on his horse, no matter how badly he is thrown. And now with a reputable promotional firm guiding him down the trail, he says he’s ready for one more high-noon championship shootout before he even thinks about riding off into the sunset. * * * Dale Brown (30-3-1) will face former WBA cruiser champion Robert Daniels (45-6-1) in the main event on ESPN2's 2004 premier of "Tuesday Night Fights," June 8 at the new Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
